Royal Mint Introduces £5 Princess Coin

five pound gold and silver coins
The Royal Mint presented the design of the new £5 gold and silver coins which commemorate the birth of the second child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The princess, named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana will have 500 gold and 9500 silver commemorative coins produced in honor of her safe arrival. The coins will display a royal seal of approval from Queen Elizabeth, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Chancellor of England.

The limited edition British coins were designed by John Bergdahl, who also designed the commemorative coins that were minted in honor of the royal daughter’s older brother, Prince George.

An interesting twist to the newly released gold and silver commemorative coins is what was minted in conjunction with their arrival, 2015 English silver pennies which will be presented to every English child born on the same day as the newborn Princess.

Silver is regarded as a birth metal and a means to bestow wishes of health and wealth to newborns, and the silver pennies are a gracious gesture towards the families of those children who shared the same birth date as the newest member of the British Royal family.

The United Kingdom will also celebrate the new royal birth by introducing a new postmark which is expected to appear on letters throughout England on Tuesday. The message says “Congratulations TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their daughter.” This congratulatory message is the first of its kind as the nation and world celebrates the birth of the new princess.
