Coins of Value: Britannia Gold and Silver Coins

Brittania Coin Denominations

The Britannia gold and silver coin are British bullion coins created by the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales. Gold versions of the Britannia have been in production since 1987 and the silver Britannia was created ten years later in 1997.

The gold Britannia coin consists of one full troy ounce of gold and has a denomination of 100 British pounds.  The silver Brittania contains the same one troy ounce weight and has a market value of two British pounds.

Both gold and silver Britannia coins come in fractional sizes as well, minted in one half, one quarter and one tenth versions that are popular among European buyers on an average income or low budget.  The silver proof sets of the Britannia have become popular over the years since their initial minting in 1998.

Brittania Coin Design

One interesting aspect of the Brittannia is the Royal Mint’s decision to change the reverse design every other year. Coins minted in even numbered years depict a new design of the standing Britannia figure.

Starting in 1999, during odd numbered years, the reverse design of the Britannia contains a different and non-repeating version of the iconic Britannia design, replacing the standing Britannia design.

Mule Britannia Coin for Collectors

The “Mule Britannia” version of the silver Britannia is of particular interest to serious rare coin collectors. In Numismatics, the term “mule” describes a coin that’s struck using two dies not designed to be paired together.

In 2014, an estimated 15,000 silver Britannia coins were inadvertently struck with the horse design from the Lunar Year of the Horse silver bullion coins created by the Royal Mint.

The Lunar Year of the Horse and Britannia silver coins are very similar in size and obverse designs, and the error in striking the silver Britannias with the horse design led them to be referred to as the “Mule Britannia”.

The error, although unfortunate, proved to be quite a windfall for rare coin collectors lucky enough to own Mule Britannias, as they command lofty prices in the open market.
