1880 Coiled Hair Stella $4 Gold Coin Sells for Nearly $2 Million

1880 Coiled Hair Stella $4 Gold Coin
A rare coin collector paid $ 1.82 million for an 1880 four dollar Coiled Hair Stella gold coin at a Heritage Central States Numismatic Society convention last week. The exceedingly rare gold coin was graded at Proof 67 by NCG and also included a CAC sticker. The high selling price for the Coiled Hair Stella was expected, as the gold coin is considered one of the finest of its kind known to exist in the world.

The impressive results of the rare coin auction demonstrated the demand for rare gold coins that exists in today’s market.  Auction figures show that over $46 million in rare U.S. coins were sold, with an additional $10 million in collectible paper money.

The New Orleans rare coin collection from which the 1880 Coiled Hair Stella came was also the source of the second highest price of the convention, with over $880,000 fetched for an 1879 Coiled Hair Stella. That version of the classic American gold coin had garnered a Proof 65 rating form PCGS, along with a CAC sticker.

Rare coin collectors and investors continue to accumulate rare gold and silver coins at prices of six figures and much higher, an indication that knowledgeable and well financed investors continue to see buying opportunities in the rare coin market.
